Planning the Perfect Destination Wedding
As things take a turn for the chilly we’ve been dreaming of sunnier days, having a flick through the album from our tipi’s recent trip to Sicily.
The tipi and our bell tents look completely at home in the woods at the foot of Mount Etna, but it got us thinking about all the behind the scenes planning that goes into organising a show-stopping event overseas. With a recent report suggesting that as many as one in four UK couples are now choosing to marry abroad, we’ve picked the brain of our in-house wedding planner Laura for her top tips on tying the knot away from home…
Top of the tips when organising nuptials abroad is to hire a professional wedding planner. ‘You would say that!’ I hear you cry, and of course It is entirely possible to go it alone but I strongly recommend using the services of an experienced planner to ensure you get your dream day with none of the stress (Pick me! Pick me!). A planner can do all the leg work for you – taking the strain during those tricky negotiations with overseas suppliers, navigating the legalities on your behalf, and providing advice on local customs and traditions. That said, if you do decide to take on the challenge here are some things you need to consider:
Before rushing to book your dream destination wedding, make sure you’ve checked the weather for your preferred time of year. While it may have been glorious sunshine when you took that trip in May, you might find rainy season is upon you come your September wedding date. Similarly, think about what the top temperatures might be. If it’s scorching hot from dawn ‘til dusk, both you and your guests might struggle with a big daytime do.
The legal bit
Each country has its own rules when it comes to getting legally married and if you don’t follow the correct procedures it can lead to trouble on your return to Blighty. To avoid this couples will often have a legal ceremony here in the UK, before hosting a symbolic blessing on the day – always ask for advice if you’re unsure what rules apply in your chosen destination.
‘We request the pleasure of your company’
While an overseas wedding might be cost effective for the bride and groom, for your guests it can be a rather expensive prospect. Think carefully about who you would like to join you on your big day and try to make things as easy as possible for them to attend. As soon as you’ve pinned down your date and your location send out save the dates so that flights, accommodation and time off work can be arranged. Try to provide as much information as you can about hotels (list options for all budgets) and transfers from the airport or train station.
The early bird catches the worm
I recommend visiting your chosen venue or site in person before you book. The internet is great for researching local suppliers but nothing beats seeing your venue first-hand. Not only will it reassure you that you’ve chosen the right spot, it will also give you a point of reference when planning the rest of the day. Nearer the time, it pays to be there up to a week before the wedding itself so that you’re on hand to iron out any last minute issues and relax before the whirlwind starts.
Contingency planning is key
Unfortunately, sometimes things happen which are out of our control so it is vitally important to have adequate wedding insurance. Talk to a professional to find out what level of cover you need and any restrictions you should be aware of. Make allowances in your budget for other unexpected extras, fees and charges that could crop up – having a contingency pot is invaluable!
